With over 577,000 signatures verified, Arizona will put abortion rights on the ballot
- By RIO YAMAT - Associated Press
Voters in Arizona will get to decide in November whether to add the right to an abortion up to about 24 weeks to the state constitution. The Arizona secretary of state’s office said Monday it certified nearly 578,000 signatures supporting the ballot measure. The coalition behind the measure says it's a huge win for voters. Arizona currently has a 15-week abortion ban. Opponents of the proposed amendment say it goes too far and could lead to unlimited and unregulated abortions in Arizona. Supporters say it would protect abortion access free from political interference.

Suspected attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels targets ship in southern Red Sea, officials say
- By JON GAMBRELL - Associated Press
A suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeted a ship in the southern reaches of the Red Sea. The attack early Tuesday happened around 115 kilometers south of the Houthi-held port city of Hodeida. Officials say the ship saw at least one explosive detonate in the distance, causing no damage. Though the Houthis didn’t immediately claim the attacks, it sometimes can take hours or even days to acknowledge their assaults. They’ve also claimed others that apparently haven’t happened. The attack comes as Yemen’s main sponsor, Iran, weighs a possible retaliatory attack against Israel over the assassination of Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh in late July.

Indians who prepaid $1,000 to order Tesla EVs ask for their money back as cars fail to arrive
- By ANIRUDDHA GHOSAL - Associated Press
Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote on Twitter in 2016 inviting Indians to preorder Tesla Model 3s. Many rushed to do so, but never got their cars. Now some who paid a $1,000 deposit with their orders have lost faith and want their money back. Tesla’s travails in India reflect a global EV market that is fast changing. The company faces stiff competition from both traditional automakers and Chinese EV makers that are expanding worldwide. India has reduced import duties for EV makers that build a factory in India. For Tesla though, with slowing sales and too much capacity, building a factory only makes sense if it want to diversify away from its vast operations in China.

Philippines protests Chinese air force jets' firing of flares in the path of patrol plane
- By JIM GOMEZ - Associated Press
The Philippine government has filed a diplomatic protest after Chinese jets flew dangerously close and fired flares in the path of a Philippine air force patrol plane over a disputed shoal in the South China Sea. The Department of Foreign Affairs said without elaborating Tuesday that a diplomatic protest has been transmitted to China. The Chinese air force jets’ actions against the Philippine military plane Thursday over the Scarborough Shoal was the first such aerial encounter since high-seas hostilities between Beijing and Manila in the busy seaway started to flare last year. China said the Philippine plane encroached into what it said was Chinese airspace over its shoal and its aircraft took action.

Elon Musk's Trump interview marred by technical glitches, Musk says its a malicious attack
- By BARBARA ORTUTAY - AP Technology Writer
Elon Musk’s much-awaited interview with former President Donald Trump was marred by technical glitches on Monday, with people unable to join the audio conversation on X’s Spaces platform. The interview, which was supposed to start at 8 p.m. EDT. Eighteen minutes in, Musk posted on X that the platform was under a “massive” DDOS, or denial-of-service attack, which is a federal criminal act that involves flooding a site with data in order to overwhelm it and knock it offline. Outage tracker Downdetector reported a spike in reports of X being inaccessible to users but it could not be immediately verified whether this was due to a malicious attack.

Colombian villagers release more than 60 soldiers who had been held captive for 3 days
- By MANUEL RUEDA - Associated Press
Colombia’s defense ministry says 66 soldiers who had been “kidnapped” by villagers in the south of the country were released unharmed and will continue to carry out operations against rebel groups in the province of Guaviare. Colombia’s army has long struggled to defeat rebel groups in the Guaviare area, which has been heavily affected by deforestation and cocaine trafficking. The rebels sometimes exert control over remote settlements in the area. In a message posted on the social platform X, the defense ministry said the soldiers had been held since Friday by villagers who were following orders from a local rebel group, known as the Jorge Suarez Briceño front.

Evacuees from resort town in the Canadian Rockies can return Friday after wildfire, officials say
- AP
Officials say about 5,000 residents of resort town in the Canadian Rockies who fled their homes because of a wildfire can return to them on Friday. Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland said Monday that residents should prepare for “a new normal” but added essential services have been restored to the point where they can allow a blanket re-entry. About 25,000 people fled the town of Jasper and its national park on the night of July 22 as wildfires inched closer to the area. Two days later, wind-whipped flames overwhelmed crews and destroyed one-third of the town’s buildings. Key infrastructure, like schools and the water treatment plant, was spared.

Jordan Chiles medal inquiry: USA Gymnastics says arbitration panel won't reconsider decision
- By The Associated Press
USA Gymnastics officials say an arbitration panel won’t reconsider a decision asking gymnast Jordan Chiles to return the bronze medal she was awarded in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics. USA Gymnastics says it will continue efforts to let Chiles keep the medal. CAS voided an on-floor appeal from Chiles’ coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4 seconds beyond the one-minute time limit for scoring inquiries. USA Gymnastics disputed the timing, saying in a statement Sunday that the agency submitted video evidence to CAS that showed Team USA coach Cecile Landi first appealed 13 seconds before the deadline.

Burials begin for victims of Brazil plane crash that killed 62, as questions remain about its cause
- By MAURICIO SAVARESE - Associated Press
The pilot of the plane that crashed down in Brazil last week has been buried in Sao Paulo, becoming the first person laid to rest among the 62 victims, as authorities continue working to determine what caused the accident. A hearse bearing the casket of Danilo Santos Romano rolled through the streets of Penha, a working class region of Sao Paulo’s east side, en route to the cemetery that lies beneath the apartment he shared with his wife. Family members and friends walked behind the vehicle and dozens of shop owners who knew him as a regular customer gathered on the sidewalks to applaud as it passed. Romano was 35.
