Global stock volatility hits the presidential election, with Trump decrying a 'Kamala Crash' (2)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is hoping a dramatic sell-off in the U.S. stock market creates an opening to attack his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, over who is best positioned to shepherd the economy.

Trump’s campaign labeled the Monday drop as a “Kamala Crash,” a message designed to undercut the energy created by the vice president's entrance into the race. But Wall Street recovered on Tuesday as stocks posted gains. Several economists said the economic data disprove Trump's comments about a coming crisis, as unemployment remains relatively low and inflation has eased.

New Mars study suggests an ocean's worth of water may be hiding beneath the red dusty surface

  • By MARCIA DUNN - AP Aerospace Writer

A new study suggests Mars may be drenched beneath its surface, with enough water hiding in the cracks of underground rocks to form a global ocean. The findings, published Monday, are based on computer modeling as well as seismic measurements from NASA's InSight lander. The spacecraft detected more than 1,300 marsquakes before shutting down two years ago. Scientists say the water is believed to be seven miles to 12 miles down in the Martian crust. It most likely would have seeped from the surface billions of years ago when Mars harbored rivers and lakes.

Prosecutors won't charge officers who killed armed student outside Wisconsin school

  • By TODD RICHMOND - Associated Press

Prosecutors say they won't charge the police officers who killed an armed student as he was trying to get inside a Wisconsin middle school. Investigators say police intercepted 14-year-old Damien Haglund as he was trying to get into Mount Horeb Middle School with an air rifle on May 1. They say officers opened fire on Haglund after he pointed the air rifle at them. The Dane County District Attorney's Office said in a statement Monday that officers were afraid Haglund would get inside the school and harm other students. He also ignored multiple commands to drop the air rifle and pointed the weapon at an officer at twice.

Zambia and Congo will discuss a border dispute that affects the flow of minerals like cobalt

  • By JACOB ZIMBA - Associated Press

Zambia’s commerce minister has flown to neighboring Congo for talks aimed at resolving a trade dispute between the countries that led to Zambia closing their border. Zambia on Sunday said it had closed its border with its northern neighbor after Congo imposed a ban on the import of soft drinks and beer from Zambia. The border closure threatens the landlocked Congo's ability to export gold, copper and cobalt from its mineral-rich eastern regions. Congo is by far the world’s biggest producer of cobalt, which is in high demand and used in batteries that power electric vehicles, smartphones and computers.

British energy giant reports violating toxic pollutant limits at Louisiana wood pellet facilities

  • By JACK BROOK - Associated Press

British energy firm Drax Global, already facing scrutiny for violating environmental regulations, disclosed this year that its Louisiana wood pellet production facilities emit hazardous air pollutants above permitted limits. Drax wood pellet production sites in Louisiana and Mississippi previously paid out millions in pollution-related penalties and settlements, promising to install controls to reduce emissions. Yet these controls did not keep emissions within permitted limits. The Mississippi facility revealed it was violating pollution limits in 2022 and faces penalties. In Louisiana, both Drax facilities disclosed this year that tests found higher than permitted toxic pollutants, including probable carcinogens.

Family calls for transparency after heatstroke death of Baltimore trash collector

  • By LEA SKENE - Associated Press

The family of a Baltimore man who died of heatstroke while collecting trash for the city’s public works agency is demanding increased transparency from local officials in the immediate aftermath of his death. They’re calling on the Baltimore City Council to conduct a series of investigative hearings. Thirty-six-year old Ronald Silver II died Aug. 2 as temperatures in the Baltimore area climbed to about 100 degrees. The city’s inspector general released a report earlier this summer saying that some agency employees didn’t have adequate access to water, ice, air conditioning and fans to help them complete their trash cleanup routes during intense summer heat.

  • By BRIAN WITTE - Associated Press

The National Transportation Safety Board, which has jurisdiction over pipelines, is investigating a natural gas explosion at a home in Bel Air, Maryland, that killed two people. The agency announced the investigation on Monday, a day after the explosion. Meanwhile, state officials have identified the two victims, and the state fire marshal’s office said they are focusing on accidental causes because there is no evidence of criminal activity. Officials say 73-year-old homeowner Ray Corkran Jr. died in the explosion. Jose Rodriguez-Alvarado, a 35-year-old contracted utility employee with Baltimore Gas and Electric, also died.

Judge says Maine can forbid discrimination by religious schools that take state tuition money

  • By DAVID SHARP - Associated Press

A judge says Maine isn't violating the constitutional rights of religious schools by requiring them to abide by a state antidiscrimination law to receive taxpayer-funded tuition assistance. But the judge also acknowledged that a higher court will have the final say. The lawsuit is one of two in Maine focusing on the collision between federal and state law. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Maine cannot discriminate against religious schools in providing tuition assistance. A state law requires that schools participating in the tuition program abide by the Maine Human Rights Act, and that includes protections for LGBTQ students and faculty.

NASCAR's postseason format meant Austin Dillon had every incentive to wreck his way to victory

  • By NOAH TRISTER - AP Sports Writer

Austin Dillon won for the first time in nearly two years in the NASCAR Cup Series. The race seemed out of reach before he spun Joey Logano out of the way and then sent Denny Hamlin into the wall as well. That all happened in the final few seconds at Richmond on Sunday night. Once the initial celebration ended, Dillon had quite a bit to answer for. But becoming a NASCAR villain for a few days may be a small price to pay for such a desperately needed victory.

Turkey hosts another round of talks to ease tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia

  • AP

Turkey has hosted a second round of talks between Ethiopia and Somalia to try and resolve a dispute over Ethiopia's deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland. The talks on Monday in the Turkish capital, Ankara, involved Turkish officials shuttling between the two delegations, which did not meet face-to-face. Tensions between the two African countries have simmered since Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland in January, which Somalia denounced as infringing upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Under the deal, Somaliland would lease land along its coastline to landlocked Ethiopia for a marine force base. In return, Ethiopia would recognize Somaliland’s independence, which Somalia says infringes on its sovereignty and territory.

Aaron Rodgers says he regrets his 'immunized' comment in 2021 in an upcoming book about the QB

Aaron Rodgers says in a soon-to-be published book that he should have handled discussing his COVID-19 immunization status differently. The New York Jets quarterback was still with the Green Bay Packers in 2021 when he told reporters he was “immunized” against the virus and then tested positive for COVID-19 three months later and had to be sidelined for 10 days. Rodgers unsuccessfully appealed to the league that his homeopathic treatment regimen should qualify him as vaccinated. ESPN reported the four-time NFL MVP says in the book “Out Of The Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers” that it's one thing he wishes could have gone differently.

The artifacts include gold pieces and jewelry dating back to Egypt’s Late and Ptolemaic periods, and some items could be displayed at one of the country’s museums. An Egyptian archaeological mission with the Supreme Council of Antiquities discovered the mud-brick tombs at the Tell al-Deir necropolis in Damietta city in Damietta governorate. The Ptolemaic dynasty was Egypt’s last before it became part of the Roman Empire.

Mexican prosecutors consider treason charges after US jails drug lord ‘El Mayo’ Zambada

  • AP

The United States managed to arrest Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, but Mexican prosecutors — and the president — now say they are considering bringing treason charges against those who handed him over. It's part of the long strange trail of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who unexpectedly appeared on a flight in July arranged by another drug capo who decided to turn himself in. Officials say Joaquín Guzmán López — the son of imprisoned cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán — flew to the U.S. on a private plane, but abducted Zambada before leaving Mexico and forced him onto the plane. Mexican prosecutors said late Sunday they were considering bringing treason charges.

Before the Olympics, Snoop Dogg has surprised drive-thru customers, thrown the first pitch at a baseball game and quickly headed to the announcer's booth and even stepping into a Wrestlemania ring. Snoop’s fun won’t end with the Olympics — he'll be on “The Voice" as a coach.

North Dakota voters to weigh in again on marijuana legalization

  • By JACK DURA - Associated Press

North Dakota voters will decide — again — whether to legalize recreational marijuana in the November general election. Secretary of State Michael Howe's office says the ballot initiative from the group New Economic Frontier that would legalize recreational marijuana earned enough signatures. Voters rejected previous measures in 2018 and 2022. In 2021, the Republican-led state House of Representatives passed bills to legalize and tax recreational marijuana, but the GOP-majority Senate defeated them. Other states such as Florida and South Dakota are set to vote on legalizing recreational marijuana in November. Twenty-four states, most recently Ohio last year, have legalized recreational marijuana.

Lebanon’s crisis-battered healthcare system is now preparing for the possibility of a devastating wider conflict with Israel, the country’s health minister tells The Associated Press in an interview. Lebanon’s caretaker government is trying to prepare for the worst with a tattered budget, a deeply divided parliament and no president. The health minister says that “we hope that all the efforts we are doing for preparing for this emergency go to waste” and a wider war is averted.

Crews begin demolishing Texas church where gunman killed more than two dozen in 2017

  • By ERIC GAY and JAMIE STENGLE - Associated Press

Crews have started to tear down a Texas church where a gunman killed more than two dozen worshippers in 2017. The crews used heavy machinery Monday to raze the small building in Sutherland Springs after some families had sought to preserve the scene of the deadliest church shooting in U.S. history. A judge last month cleared the way for the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church to be torn down. The church has, until now, kept the sanctuary as a memorial. Members of First Baptist voted in 2021 to tear down the building over the protests of some in the small community. Authorities say 26 people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn baby, died in the Nov. 5, 2017.
